Niall Docherty, taxi driver from Lucan, known as ‘Tiny’ recently won the Nation’s Cup playing pool with his doubles partner David Kelly ‘the Pope’ who was also a taxi driver. But that’s not the first trophy Niall has earned. Last November, as part of the Irish team represented Ireland in the world championships in Perth Scotland, became Senior World Pool Champions – the first Irish team to do this. ‘It was a tough competition last year, playing against the best in the world, but we were grateful for the enormous support from Irish people that spurred us on to win the world championship’.
Niall has been playing pool since childhood when his father owned a pub on the Dublin quays. and I’m sure he never dreamed that the Lord Mayor of Dublin would host a reception for him and the Irish team recognising their achievement.
Next April Niall is heading to Bridlington, England to represent Ireland again, this time for the European Pool Championships, so let’s support him and the team as they go for gold again.
